Charles H. Hightower, age 78, of Newport, passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2003, at his home after a brief illness. He was born May 15, 1925.
He attended Open Door Church.
He retired from Bell South after 45 years of service. He was a member of Newport Lodge #234 and a 32nd Degree Mason, and had recently received his 50-year pin. He was also a member of the Newport Shrine Club.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army 88 Chemical Battalion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vol and Effie Hightower; brother, Hugh William Hightower; and mother-in-law, Alma Lane.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mable Lane Hightower; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Pat Hightower; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Angie and Randy Swann; great-grandchildren, Travis and Lauren Swann; sister and brother-in-law, Marcia and Bill Wallin; also brothers-in-law and wives, Hubert and Joyce, Earl B. and Betty Lane, all of Newport.
He also leaves several nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Manes Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Scott Gorrell, Rev. J.D. Sisk, and Rev. Hal Kirk officiating.
Interment will be in Open Door Cemetery.
Family received friends Monday evening from 6 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
