NEWPORT-Joseph Evan Shults, 22, of 149 Judds Lane, in Newport, died in a vehicle crash Sunday, Nov. 6, just before 9 p.m., when the 2000 Nissan Sentra he was driving rear-ended a disabled tractor-trailer blocking the left lane of traffic headed west on the Old Knoxville Highway near the Interstate 40 interchange, the Newport Police Department reported.
Shults was pronounced dead on the scene, NPD Patrolman William Garber reported.
Reid Hawley, of Newport, said he was driving a 2000 tractor-trailer owned by Hawley Transport Services, at about 8:50 p.m., when the vehicle stopped running while he was in the left lane of the Old Knoxville Highway, near the Clevenger Cut-off.
Hawley said he had pulled off the highway as far as he could on a narrow shoulder in the median, under the two lighted I-40 overpass bridges, turned his four-way emergency flashers on and raised the hood of the tractor-trailer to add coolant when the crash occurred.
A driver in a vehicle behind Shults' vehicle said he did not see Shults hit his brakes before crashing into the tractor-trailer.
