Dr. Burrell Lusha Wood, Jr., PhD, 90, of 301 Reedy Fork Road, Apartment 135, Laurens, SC, and formerly of 714 South Harper Street, husband of Bethyl Davis Wood, passed away Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at The Laurens County Hospital.
Born in Cosby, TN, he was a son of the late Rev. Burrell Lusha Wood, Sr. and Maude Waldrop Wood.
He earned a Bachelor's degree from Presbyterian College, a Master's degree from the University of Georgia, and a Ph. D from the University of North Carolina. He did graduate study at Purdue University and had a Fellowship from the University of Zurich.
Dr. Wood was instrumental in setting up the South Carolina science fair program. He taught chemistry at Presbyterian College and was Chairman of the Chemistry Department at Furman University.
He managed the Atomic Energy Commission's educational exhibits program which toured Latin America and European countries. Also, he was Deputy Director of a division of the US Department of Energy.
He attended Laurens First United Methodist Church and was a board member for the Laurens County Genealogical Society.
He was predeceased by a brother Raymond L. Wood and two sisters Maudaline W. Johnson and Maxine W. Johnson.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three daughters: Julie E. Harbin and husband Joe of Murrell's Inlet, SC; Vicki J. DePalma and husband Rory of Paso Robles, CA; and Pamela W. Browne and husband Neil of Greenville, SC; two sons Burrell L. Wood, III of Clinton, SC; and Jerry A. Wood and wife Judy of Sautee Nacoochee, GA; one brother John C. Wood of Newport News, VA; and three grandchildren Alan M. Wood and wife Julie of Atlanta, GA; Susan E. Larsen and husband Eric of Tampa, FL; and Jennifer DePalma of Paso Robles, CA; two nephews Thomas Wood Sommer, PhD and wife Beth of Sautee Nacoochee, GA; and Bob J. Sommer and wife Lenore, of Sarasota, FL; and one niece Carolyn S. Bailey, Ph.D, and husband Jim of Lexington, NC.
Graveside services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 10, 2010, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Bill Rogers.
The family received friends after the service at the cemetery.
