Wilbur Hannon Hale, age 89, of Newport, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2002, at Cocke County Convalescent Center.
He was preceded in death by parents, T.C. and Susie Runyan Hale; brother, Allen Hale; sister, Bess Ailey; mother-in-law and husband, Sue and Ivan (Pete) Hale.
Wilbur was an active member of First Christian Church, where he served as an elder. He was also a member of Come Join Us Sunday School Class. Wilbur was an avid gardener until poor health forced him to give it up. He retired from A.C. Lawrence Leather Company, where he was time study engineer. He served four years in the Army.
He is survived by his wife of almost 54 years, Lucille Hale; sister-in-law, Nannie G. Hale, of Newport; niece and husband, Lorene and Kirk Jenkins, of Newport; niece, Betty Gregory, of Cleveland, Ohio; nephew and his wife, Roger and Shirley Hale, of Oak Ridge; grandnephews, Kirk Jenkins, of Sevierville, Ken Jenkins, of Gatlinburg, and Rod Gregory, of Ohio; also many cousins, friends and extended church family.
The funeral will be held 8 p.m. Friday, February 22, 2002, at Manes Funeral Home Chapel, with Ed Hardison officiating, with burial 11 a.m. Saturday, February 23, 2002, in Union Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Manes Funeral Home prior to the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to First Christian Church of Newport, Johnson Bible College, 7900 Johnson Drive, Knoxville, TN 37998-1001 or Christian Church Foundation for the handicapped.
