Two-vehicle collision
Author: David Popiel
The Newport Police Department, Allied E.M.S. and the Newport Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle collision Saturday afternoon that sent one crash victim to the hospital. According to Newport Patrolman Jason Smith, Thomas Inman, 52, Newport, along with witnesses, stated Arlene Hightower, 91, Newport, was driving her 2002 Honda and was in the southbound turning lane of the Cosby Highway near the intersection of Hedrick Drive when her car collided a 2009 Lexus RX350 (driven by Inman). Hightower reportedly cut in front of Inman's SUV. Inman told Smith he swerved to miss Hightower's vehicle but the Honda clipped his Lexus. A witness told Smith that after the collision, the Honda continued traveling right, toward Hedrick, and struck a utility pole head-on. Hightower and her twin sister, Allene Gray, were taken to Baptist Hospital of Cocke County for treatment of their injuries. Gray was reportedly treated and released while Hightower was reportedly taken to UT Medical Center. Hightower was listed in critical condition as of Monday morning. No charges were filed in the incident.
