Rolan Everette Freeman, 78, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2014, at his home in Newport. He was born October 8, 1935, to T. E. Freeman and Rebecca (Hall) Freeman Glenn. He grew up working in the family business, Freeman Furniture, before becoming a traveling sales representative for several manufacturing companies for 35 years. He then returned to retail business working for Ramsey’s Furniture in White Pine for 10 years before his retirement in 2012. He was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church and attended services until recently when his failing health prevented his doing so. He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother Roger Freeman, brothers Warren and Paul Freeman, and half-sister Iris Dale Glenn Wood. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Betty Jean Lewis Freeman of Newport, son Lewis (Tamera) Freeman of Rocky Face, Georgia, brother Dan Freeman of Newport, grandchildren Jordon and Caitlin Freeman, sisters-in-law Eula Freeman and Imogene Freeman, both of Newport, and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014, in the chapel of First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. James Bennington officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives from 12:00—2:00 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the funeral services. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to First United Methodist Church, 212 Washington Ave., Newport, TN 37821. Funeral services for Rolan Everette Freeman, well-known Newport businessman and church leader, will be held Wednesday, June 18, 2014, in the chapel of First United Methodist Church.
Freeman, 78, passed away Sunday, June 15, at his Newport home following a short period of declining health.
He was born in the Old 15th District of Cocke County on Oct. 8, 1935, to T.E. and Rebecca (Hall) Freeman, who began what would become one of Cocke County's leading furniture businesses in the mountain community.
Following the family's move to Newport , Freeman entered Newport Grammar School. He graduated from Cocke County High School in 1953.
While still in school, he began working in the family business and delivered furniture to many Newport and Cocke County homes.
In 1966, he left the company and became a traveling sales representative for several manufacturing firms, work he continued for the next 35 years. He then returned to retail business and worked for Ramsey Furniture in White Pine for another decade before his retirement in 2012.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church for many years and served the church as a member of the Finance Committee, Church Council, and other areas.
As a grandson of "Singing Sam" Hall, Freeman inherited the family's noted musical ability and at one time sang with in a church quartet with his twin brother Roger Freeman, Maurice 'Diz' Huffman, and Bill McNabb.
He was a former member of the Newport Lions Club and a former Gideon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother Roger Freeman, brothers Warren and Paul Freeman, and half-sister Iris Dale Glenn Wood.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty Jean Lewis Freeman, son Lewis (Tamera) Freeman of Rocky Face, Ga., brother Dan Freeman of Newport , and grandchildren Jordon and Caitlin Freeman.
