Donald H. Cates , MD , age 88 , of Fair Oaks , California , died unexpectedly on June 7 , 2015 .
A native of Newport, he was a son of the late Arthur A. and Lola (Burke) Cates and a graduate of Central (now Cocke County) High School.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving his country in the United States Navy.
After graduating from medical school, he spent three years at Valentine-Shults Clinic in the early 1950s as a practicing physician.
He then served his country again during the Korean War. Following that service, he chose to settle in San Diego, California because he been stationed there during his time of service. Later he moved to Riverside, California where he practiced medicine until 1981, after which he joined the United States Air Force, eventually achieving the rank of Lt/Col.
An avid musician, he played the clarinet. He also enjoyed golf.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lina Cates , whom he met while she was studying nursing in Memphis during World War II.
Other survivors include two daughters Paula Cates of Denver, Colorado and Pamela Belke of Fair Oaks , California , and one sister, Joanne Deakins of Jonesborough, TN, and many cousins.
