CULVAHOUSE, RUTH WEAR - age 77 of Ten Mile died Monday September 3, 2001, at her home on Watts Bar Lake. A native of Townsend, she was a daughter of the late Sheridan H. and Callie Webb Wear and was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Boggess Culvahouse, Sr.; grandson, Arthur Boggess Culvahouse, III; one brother, Bobby H. Wear and three sisters, Margaret Wear Greaser, Thelma Wear Bradshaw and Mary Charles Wear Myers. She graduated from Knoxville Business College and moved to Meigs County with her husband where they co-founded the Euchee Boat Dock. They operated the marina until the late 1950's. Following her husband's death in 1979, she fulfilled the remainder of her husband's Meigs County Commissioner term. She also served as Director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, servicing six counties from 1978 until her retirement in 1993. She was active in local and regional civic organizations as well as Lakeside Baptist Church where she was a founding member and served as Trustee, Director of Wwomen's Missionary Union and the Budget Chairperson. Her involvements included serving as: Director and President of the Meigs County Chamber of Commerce, Board of Directors and officer for Hiwassee Mental health Regional Health Corporation, a President Reagan appointee to the Tennessee State Committee of the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service for eight years, founding board member and secretary of Meigs County Fair Association, ex-director of Tennessee Association of Senior Volunteers, Board of Directors and President of Ocoee Regional Health Corporation, Advisory Board for Cleveland State Community College Small Business Development Center, President of Volunteer Support Committee for the Department of Human Services, Trustee of Baker-Moulton Cemetery, former chairperson for the Meigs Chapter of the American Cancer Society, very active in Meigs County and the state Republican Party activities, President of Ten Mile PTA, leader of Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Girl's Auxiliary. She also received the Meigs County Mother of the Year Award in 1987. Survivors include two sons, Arthur B. Culvahouse, Jr., Alexandria, Va. and Dr. S. Wear Culvahouse, Greenwich, Conn.; two daughters, Martha S. Culvahouse, Memphis and Melinda Culvahouse Hardy, Richmond, Va.; four grandsons, Wade Culvahouse Fox, Memphis, William Culvahouse Hardy, Thomas Alexander Hardy and James Houston Hardy, all of Richmond; four granddaughters, Catherine Culvahouse Fox, Memphis, Sarah Abbott Culvahouse, Elizabeth Louise Culvahouse, and Anne Pierce Culvahouse, all of Alexandria, Va.; one brother, Bill Dee Wear, Alcoa; three sisters, Helen Wear Talley, Townsend, Evelyn Wear West, Clinton and Sheirly Wear White, Maryville. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, in the Chapel of Jerry Smith Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Fowler, Rev. Ray Brown and Rev. Greg McCosh. Interment will follow at Baker-Moulton Cemetery in Ten Mile. Ruth Wear Culvahouse, native of Townsend, dies Funeral services will be held this morning for Ruth Wear Culvahouse, 77, of Ten Mile who died Monday at her home on Watts Bar Lake where she and her late husband founded and operated Euchee Boat Dock for many years. She was a native of Townsend and member of the large and well-known family of the late Sheridan and Callie Webb Wear. Her son, Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr., member of a prominent Washington, D. C., law firm, headed the White House legal staff during the administration of President Ronald Reagan and was the lead attorney handling the nomination of Secretary of State Colin Powell in Congress earlier this year. She had succeeded her husband, Arthur B. Culvahouse Sr., on the Meigs County Commission upon his death in 1979, served as director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, servicing six counties until her retirement in 1993. She was preceded in death by her brother, Bobby H. Wear, and three sisters, Margaret Wear Greaser, Thelma Wear Bradshaw, and Mary Charles Wear Myers. Surviving brothers and sisters include a brother Bill Wear of Alcoa and three sisters, Helen Wear Talley of Townsend, Evelyn Wear West of Clinton, and Sheirly Wear White of Maryville. She is the mother of Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr. of Alexandria, Va.; Dr. S. Wear Culvahouse of Greenwich, Conn.,; Martha S. Culvahouse of Memphis and Melinda Culvahouse Hardy of Richmond, Va.
