Anna Kate Allen, 94, retired Knox County teacher who began a 65-year career in a one-room schoolhouse in Sevier County in the early 1900s, will be buried today at Highland Memorial Cemetery.
She died of cancer at her home Tuesday.
Miss Allen first taught at a school in Kodak and in later years taught in Oneida, Harlan, Ky., and Oak Ridge. She concluded her career in the 1970s as a history teacher at Carter High School. At one time, she had taught 50 years without being absent because of illness.
She had a deep love for music and was honored in 1990 at Harlan High School at a 50-year class reunion for beginning a music program there. She was a member of the Sweet Adalines and the Senior Citizens Music Chorus. She also was a member of the Flower Lovers Garden Club.
She leaves her sisters, Gladys Wright, Knoxville; Zelma Campbell, Richmond, Va.; and Wayne Whaley of Pigeon Forge; and a brother, Kenneth Allen, Alabama.
Services were Thursday night at McCarty's. The family will meet at 10:15 this morning at McCarty's for a procession to Highland Memorial Cemetery for an 11 a.m. graveside service.
