SMITH, MR. BOBBY LINTON - February 1934 - January 2011, lifetime resident of Cocke County, passed away the morning of January 20, 2011 after a sudden illness. Bobby was a graduate of Parrottsville High School, earned his Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in education from East Tennessee State University, and an Educational Specialists Degree (Ed.S.) from the University of Tennessee. He devoted his life to the education of Cocke County children. His career began at Cosby School in the 1950's before and after his service in Korea as a U. S. Army PFC. He served at Cosby as a teacher for a total of 2 years, then as Principal at Parrottsville for 8 years. Bobby then became the first Director of Head Start for the Cocke County School System in 1965. He founded and organized an annual summer program for Cocke County students at Pickett State Park from 1974 - 1988. He also served as Director of Title One for Cocke County Schools, serving for 32 years. He received a national award for directing Title One in 1996. He also founded and served as Director for the East Tennessee Title One Conference held yearly in Gatlinburg, TN for 30 years. Bobby dedicated his life and career to educating the youth of Cocke County and believed in equal educational opportunity. Currently he was serving as the vice-chairman of the Newport Grammar School Board of Education. Bobby was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Faith, and was an active member of Holy Trinity Church until his preceding illness of 2010. He was organist for both Luther Memorial Lutheran Church and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in the 1060's. He was the practicing organist for over thirty years at Holy Trinity and service as Chairman of the Church Council. He served the church in many other capacities including Treasurer. Bobby was preceded in death by his mother, Flora Faye Barger Smith and father, Emory Linten Smith. He is survived by his living wife of 47 years, Helen Lynne Smith. He will be forever remembered by his son, Robert Vincent Smith and daughter-in-law, Angela Smith; his beloved grandson, Brandon Robert Smith and granddaughter, Miranda Wykle; his brother, David Wayne Smith, sister-in-law, Janice Smith and nephew Chris Smith; his special aunt, Wanda Mae Ottinger; cousins, Mary Ford and Nell Blazer; his brother-in-law, Bob and wife, Farris Phillips and their five children and eight grandchildren; along with many other family and friends who were blessed to know him. Bobby especially enjoyed his extended winter vacations after retirement at Garden City Beach, SC and spending time with his family, especially his grandson. The funeral service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Arne Walker and Steve Thompson officiating. Family and friends will meet at 11:15 a.m. Sunday morning at Union Cemetery for the 11:30 interment. The family will receive friends fro 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made, in memory of Bobby, to the Bread Basket or to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 140 Lincoln Ave. Newport, TN, 37821. NGS library named in honor of Smith

NEWPORT-Calling him "my friend and my mentor,"Newport City Board of Education Director of Schools Steve Thompson officiallyproclaimed the Newport Grammar School's library named in honor of deceasedboard member Bobby L. Smith during the board's meeting Monday evening.
Later Smith's son Robert Smith and grandson Brandon Smithunveiled a sign proclaiming the library named in honor of the elder Smith whodied earlier this year. On hand for the occasion were Smith's wife Lynne, otherfamily members and friends from Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Board Chair Charlotte Mims recalled Smith's first days asa school board member. "When he came on the Board," she said,"he went through our budget with Mr. (David) Bible and got it straightenedout."
In Thompson's remarks, he said his friendship with Smithbegan nearly 40 years ago when both worked for the Cocke County Board ofEducation and continued after Thompson assumed his present position with theCity Board of Education.
