Alfred E. "Al" Smith, 81, of New Market went to be with his Lord on Thursday, May 19, 2011 after a battle with cancer. He was currently pastor of Paw Paw Hollow Baptist Church. He pastored 10 churches over the last 58 years and held over 300 revivals.
In his own words, "I have been privileged to have worked with some of the best people around. If I've done any good, it was with God's help. He blessed me with His gift of quoting His word."
Rev. Smith was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Wanda Louise Smith; and his parents, Octa and Henry Smith; brothers, Fred, Jim and Glen Smith; sisters Alma Smith Cole and Wilma Smith; son-in-law, Bill Williams.
He leaves his daughter, Darlene Williams; sons Roger (Jan) Smith and Phil (Mary Lou) Smith; 4 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren; brother Rev. Allen (Nita) Smith; sisters Betty (John) Runion, Kathryn (Melvin) Hammer, Jean (Junior) Morgan, Helen Morgan; and special friend, Faye Cronas; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Paw Paw Hollow Baptist Church with Rev. Ronnie White and Rev. Arthur Pedigo officiating. Interment 11:00 a.m. Monday in Pleasant Grove (Piney) Church Cemetery. Deacons of his church will serve as pallbearers and ministers with whom he worked will be honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gideon International, Jefferson County Camp, P.O. Box 1245, Dandridge, Tennessee 37725. The family will receive friends 1-6 p.m. Sunday at the church prior to the service.
