Billy Dean "Captain Bill" Ownby, age 65, of Knoxville, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at his home.
He was born May 28, 1943 in Sevierville, the son of Ernest Ownby and Rushia Ogle Ownby. Mr. Ownby graduated from Pi Beta Phi High School in Gatlinburg in 1961 and served with the US Army from 1965 – 1971, where he was a helicopter crew chief and technician.
Mr. Ownby enjoyed following UT football. He also enjoyed fishing, especially at Tellico, with his good friends, Steve Mayfield and Bill Huskey. He had many long-time friends and enjoyed their company.
Mr. Ownby was employed with SCI at the Y-12 plant, where he was a computer analyst.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Trula Brackins and Helen Ownby; brothers, Rex Ownby and J. L. Ownby.
He is survived by his wife, Fay McGinnis Ownby;
Son, Clinton Ownby;
Daughter, Laura Sprain and her husband Mike;
Grandsons, Kyle Ownby and Ethan Sprain – all of Knoxville;
Sister-in-law, Christine Ownby of Sevierville;
Brother-in-law, Donald Brackins of Pigeon Forge and
Several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Sal Malad and all of the caring staff at Tennessee Cancer Specialists, along with the many other physicians and nurses at Ft. Sanders Park West, who gave him special care during his illness.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 31, 2008 from 6 – 8pm at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral will follow at 8pm with Rev. Bobby Lay and Rev. Steve Ownby officiating.
