During the Spanish-American War Joseph F. Mateer enlisted at Springfield,
Illinois, on 28 June 1898, as a sergeant in Company L 9th Regiment Illinois
Infantry Volunteers; he was discharged at Augusta, Georgia, on 20 May 1899. At
the time of enlistment he was a farmer, 5 feet 6 inches tall, of fair
complexion with blue eyes and dark hair. After the war he was employed in 1906
in a grain elevator in Harness, Logan County, Illinois; in 1921 he was in the
seed and grain business in Wayne City, Wayne County, Illinois; he had also
lived in Long Prairie and Canton Illinois. Fannie M. Mateer's estate was
administered in 1966 by Coyn Mateer.
