NEWPORT—Newport Grammar School (NGS) eighth-grader Amanda Hurst won the school’s annual spelling bee for the second consecutive year Thursday.
The spelling bee lasted through round nine, with Hurst spelling the word “bodega” correctly for the win the competition.
To be officially named the winner of the event, she also had to spell an entirely new word correctly. That word, “golem,” clinched her championship.
The spelling bee started out with 18 contestants-consisting of three fourth-graders, four fifth-graders, four sixth-graders, four seventh-graders, and three eighth-graders.
Seventh-grader Brandon Denton was the first runner-up in the competition. He received a certificate and $15.
Hurst, who is the daughter of Dr. Timothy Hurst and Toni Hurst, also received a certificate and $25.
She will now advance to the News-Sentinel Regional Spelling Bee in Knoxville on March 5.
