Died: 06-21-2001 Mike Hazelwood, age 39, of Newport, went to join his mother and father, Earl and Inez Teague Hazelwood, in Heaven, June 21, 2001, following his courageous battle with cancer.
He was a member of Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church. He had served in law enforcement for about 23 years. He started with the Cocke County Sheriff’s Department. He was a Sgt. with the Newport Police Department. He was a member of the Newport/Cocke County Law Enforcement Honor Guard, the Newport Masonic Lodge #234 A&FM and a veteran of the US Army and the Army National Guard.
He was the loving husband of Sonja Lane Hazelwood and loving father of Lindsey and Maisie Hazelwood, of Newport; other survivors include his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Brenda Lane, of Atlanta, GA; brother-in-law, Phillip Lane, of Atlanta, GA; sister-in-law, Amy Maples, of Sevierville; aunt and uncle, A.L. and Bogle Hazelwood, of Newport; aunt, Lenora Allen, of Newport; also several cousins.
The funeral will be held 3 p.m., Saturday, at Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church, with Rev. Craig Ward, Rev. Alvin Watts, and Rev. Mike Brooks officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m., Sunday, at Shady Grove Cemetery, with the Newport/Cocke County Law Enforcement Honor Guard presiding.
The family will receive friends from 12 until 3 p.m., Saturday, at Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church, prior to the funeral.
