Woodrow Wilson Allen, age 77 passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at Park West Hospital in Knoxville following a determined and courageous battle against cancer. He was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church, known and liked by many in the community as a quiet, gentle, and unassuming man. He took great pride in serving his country in the United States Army in Korea during that war. He later served his community as a longtime emergency medical technician before retiring from the Cocke County Ambulance Service. He had a lifelong fascination with airplanes, studied to be a pilot, and was thrilled to achieve solo flight status. He volunteered with the Tennessee Civil Air Patrol. He was preceded in death by father and mother, Oscar and Otie Allen. He is survived by former wife, Norma Allen, who remained a faithful Christian friend throughout his illness. Survivors also include son, Chris Allen of Newport, son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Kathryn Allen of Knoxville; grandchildren, Veronica Faith and Joseph Allen of Knoxville; sister and brother-in-law, Joanna and Elbert Johnson of Thomasville, North Carolina; niece and her husband, Lana and Benny Mainor of Thomasville, North Carolina; great niece, Jennifer Gunter and family of Matthews, North Carolina; beloved Aunt Leonora Allen, age 94, of Newport; and many other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Brown’s Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brown’s with burial following at Shady Grove Baptist Church. The family respectfully requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Shady Grove Baptist Church, c/o Treasurer Sue Townsend, 1413 Arlis Ball Road, Newport, 37821.
