  Joseph Tedford McTeer served in the Confederate forces during the Civil War, as a private and sergeant in Company I, Colonel Ashby's 2nd Tennessee Cavalry and also as a private in Company E 4th Battalion, Branner's Tennessee Cavalry. Throughout most of his life Joseph T. McTeer was engaged in the clothing business, first as a travelling salesman and later with a retail store in Knoxville.
