U.S. Veteran Arthur Shelton, 86, of Newport, Tennessee passed away on Flag Day June 14, 2017 at the Tennova Healthcare-Newport Convalescent Center in Newport, TN.
Reception of friends and viewing will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at Manes Funeral Home, Newport, TN. A celebration of his life memorial service will begin at 7:00 pm with the Rev. Riley Huffstetler officiating. The next day, the graveside service procession will commence at Manes Funeral Home at 1:30 pm, June 18, for burial at Union Cemetery in Newport, officiated by the Rev. Edward J. Young.
Mr. Shelton was born on August 9, 1930 in the Irish Cutt area of Cocke County, Tennessee to Robert Shelton and Ella (Burgess) Shelton. Entering military service in September 1948, he was a Korean-era United States Army Veteran and paratrooper, serving with the famed 82nd Airborne of Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, NC. He made over 30 parachute jumps.
Mr. Shelton was preceded in death by his parents, Robert (known as “Poppy”) and Ella Burgess Shelton. Also predeceased are six brothers: Paul (Kate), J.D. “Bob” (Lucille), James “Buster” (Katherine), Ted, Morris (Maisie), and Dale (Dot); three sisters: Myrtle Gentry (Roy), Eula Gentry (Cole), and Edith Merrill (Gilbert). Also predeceased is son Tommy Arthur Shelton.
He is survived by his wife Eva Shelton. His sister Evelyn Hopkins (David). Children Michael S. Shelton (Ann), Larry “Yogi” Shelton (Lydia), Janet (Shelton) Newbill, step-daughter Margie Webster Sorge (David). His grandchildren LCDR (USN) Michael S. Shelton II (Noelle), Heather Danielle Anderson (Matthew), Daryl Paul Shelton (Sarah), Amber Nicolle Day (Kevin), great-grandchildren Lillian Grace Shelton, Joseph Michael Shelton, Lorelai Rose Anderson, Autumn Grace Anderson, and Riley Kate Shelton. And several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Shelton worked at the American Enka Company in Lowland, which was a major national producer of several synthetic fibers. American Enka was later absorbed by BASF. He retired in 1992 after a 40-year career at Enka / BASF.
He helped coach Minor and Little League Baseball many years ago. He and Eva, having first met 18 years ago and married for almost 17 years, loved to travel and loved to talk about their trips out west to the Dakotas, Mt. Rushmore, and the like. This included taking his sisters out west to Colorado to see Eva’s daughter. They also had traveled to New Mexico and Arizona to visit Eva’s family. In more recent years, he loved his involvement with local politics and AmVets.
