  On 4 February 1858 William McTeer and wife Margaret J. McTeer of Knox County, Tennessee, deeded to W. S. Porter of Blount County, Tennessee, for $657.40, lands in the 8th Civil District, Blount County, formerly owned by Joseph Tedford. In the 1850 census of Blount County, 9th Civil District, William McTeer aged 34 years was listed as a tailor, with wife Margaret aged 33 years, and six children aged one to twelve years. In addition to the McTeer family, this household included four more "tailors" as well as other tradesmen and lodgers to a total of 27 persons. About the close of the Civil War William and his family moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where they remained until 1876, when they returned to Knoxville, Tennessee, and were thereafter engaged in the wholesale clothing business.
