NASHVILLE-Cocke County native Bill Shults has been elected by his colleagues on the Tennessee Claims Commission to a two-year term as chairman.
In addition to his normal duties as Commissioner of the Eastern Grand Division of the State, Commissioner Shults will have various administrative responsibilities in connection with the operations of the Commission.
Shults was appointed by Governor Phil Bredesen to the Commission in May, 2006.
The Tennessee Claims Commission decides a wide variety of civil claims filed against the state.
Commissioner Shults has been practicing law for 31 years, 25 of which have been in Newport and East Tennessee. He also worked for the Chairman of the National Labor Relations Board for one year and with the United Mine Workers of America Legal Department for five years.
Commissioner Shults and his wife Odette live in Newport, from which he travels to all of the counties in the Eastern one-third of the state to hear and decide cases.
