(February 5, 1920 - August 30, 2016)
Love Gray Shults died August 30, 2016, at her home in Newport, Tennessee. Mrs. Shults was born to Delia R. and Samuel H. Gray on February 5, 1920, in Cocke County.
Having earned an associate degree from Tennessee Wesleyan College and a bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State College, Mrs. Shults taught in the Cocke County School System until marrying Dr. Glen C. Shults on December 20, 1946. The couple had three sons, Bill, Cliff and Glen C.
Mrs. Shults was devoted to her family and active in a number of civic and faith organizations throughout her life, including proudly the March of Dimes, Cub Scouts and First Baptist Church, Newport. She loved Cocke County and its people, and her legacy to that community will be ongoing. Mrs. Shults was predeceased by her husband Glen, son Cliff, and eight brothers and sisters and their spouses. She is survived by son Bill and his wife Odette of Newport; son Glen C. and his wife Linda Vespereny of Asheville, North Carolina; daughter-in-law Ellen Koutsky of La Jolla, California; grandson Andrew Shults and his wife Danya of Brooklyn, New York; granddaughter Sarah Shults of La Jolla; and grandson Thomas Shults of Asheville; as well as a number of nephews and nieces from both the Gray and Shults sides of her family of whom she was immensely proud in light of their many accomplishments.
The Shults family would especially like to thank caregivers Kay and Kim Gregg, Veda and Gwen Roach, Teri Agee, Joyce Bentley, Irene Arnold, and Eloise Marshall. The care and love which they gave to our mother in the last months was simply amazing. The Shults family also owes a sincere debt of gratitude to our mother’s longtime friend Tammy Francis and her staff at Smoky Mountain Home Health and Hospice and to her physicians Drs. Jim Williams, Tom Conway and Ken Johnson, who practice medicine the same way her husband and son did.
The family will receive friends from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, September 3, at First Baptist Church of Newport. Funeral services for Mrs. Shults will follow at 11 a.m. with Drs. Rich Lloyd and Charlie Boggan officiating. Mrs. Shults will be buried beside her husband at Union Cemetery, Newport.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that any memorial gifts be made to the First Baptist Church of Newport Educational Fund to be used for the education of children in Cocke County, or to the Boys and Girls Club of Newport.
