James Dale 'Jim' Shults, age 79, of Abilene, Texas, died peacefully early Sunday morning, September 22, 2013.
He was born in the Bogard community of Cocke County, TN on April 30, 1934, a son of the late Horace and Zula (Norris) Shults.
He attended Sunset Gap Elementary and Cosby High Schools.
He served his country in the United States Army as a radioman for the 101st Airborne Division 'Screamin Eagles'.
He married Carol Alferink on July 15, 1957 in Cleveland, Ohio.
A retired truck driver, he was known as 'Streaker' and hauled cattle for 50 years.
Jim was a jovial, fun-loving person who never met a stranger. He loved the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers. He also enjoyed his visits to Cocke County to visit family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Duke Shults, David Shults, and Donald Shults, and three sisters, Inelle Shults, Ina Rae Shults, and Evelyn Shults Hartsell.
Survivors include his wife Carol Shults of Abilene, TX; two daughters Pam (Michael) Huffman of Abilene, TX and Bobbie (Mark) Hill of Lubbock, TX; two sisters Miriam Keener of Cosby and Mary Henry of Chattanooga; grandchildren Jimmy Huffman, Jeremy Huffman, Kim Dickey, Kristi Baker, Davie Garner, Kenny Shults, Larry Floyd, Todd Garner, and Tabitha Lopez; eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He will also be dearly missed by his beloved 'Shultsie'.
The family received friends Monday, September 23, 2013, at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at Elliott-Hamil Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, Abilene, TX with burial following in Hamby Cemetery. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hendrick Hospice Care, 1682 Hickory St., Abilene, TX 79601.
