Evelyn Shults Denton Hartsell, age 85, of Cosby, died Monday morning, February 21, 2011, in St. Mary’s Hospital, Knoxville, following a lingering illness.
She was born in Cosby on November 1, 1925, third child of the late Horace and Zula (Norris) Shults. Educated at Sunset Gap School, she was later adopted by her maternal aunt and uncle, the late Caywood and Gladys (Norris) Denton. During World War II, She was among several Cocke County citizens who traveled to “The Secret City,” later known as Oak Ridge, to work on The Manhattan Project. Following World War II, she returned to Cosby and later married Bruce Hartsell. For several years, they resided in Cleveland, OH.
Following his death, she returned to Cosby. She was a member of Jenkins Chapel United Methodist Church and, in later years, transferred her membership to Union Missionary Baptist Church. Before her health failed, she excelled at gardening and cooking, and during the Christmas season delighted in making different types of candy to share with her family and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Duke, David and Donald Shults, and two sisters, Ina Rhea and Inelle Shults.
She is survived by two sisters, Miriam Shults Keener of Cosby and Mary Shults Henry of Chattanooga; one brother Jim Shults of Abilene, TX; dear friends and special neighbors Eugene and Brenda Arrowood of Cosby, with whom she made her home; special friends Warren and Marilyn Bryant and Darryll and Marilyn Mantooth, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral Services were held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 in the chapel of Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Wiley Woody officiating. The family received friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. prior to the service. Memorial Gifts may be made to Union Missionary Baptist Church, in care of Marilyn Bryant, 820 Yellow Springs Road. Cosby, TN 37722. Graveside services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at Jenkins Chapel Cemetery, in Bogard.
