Sandra Nell Winter Harper, 74 , of Leesburg , VA, and formerly of Parrottsville, died Tuesday, July 7, 2015. She was the beloved daughter of Ted and Gladys Winter. She grew up on the family farm where she rode horses, collected stray animals, wandered the fields, and played in the creeks of Oak Hill. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church. Her tightknit family included her parents, one sister, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She attended Parrottsville High School, where her father was both her principal and teacher. Throughout the years, she remained close to her classmates and was planning to attend their August reunion. (A memorial will be held at the upcoming reunion with classmates recalling her mischievous pranks and fun-loving ways.) She will be remembered as a favorite friend of all of her classmates.
After attending Shorter College in Georgia for one year, Sandy transferred to ETSU and earned a degree in elementary education. She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority and enjoyed playing bridge on Wednesday nights with soldiers living at Mountain Home. Later in life, she continued her passion for playing bridge and became a bowling champion. Reading, working crossword puzzles, and lunching with friends were some of her other pleasures.
After graduation from college, she married her high school sweetheart, Billy Harper , who had just returned from a three-year Marine tour. Billy's employment with the U.S. State Department (American Embassy) took the newly married couple to Maracaibo, Venezuela, and Paris, France. In 1967, Billy became an air traffic controller, and they settled in Leesburg , VA, and started their family with Sandy becoming a stay-at-home mother. She joined Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and volunteered for twenty years at the Blossom and Bloom Shop, a charity organization.
Sandy is survived by her husband of 53 years: Billy; daughters: Kathryn Winter Polen and Amy Amanda Harper ; grandsons: Adam and Caleb Polen; sister: Janyce Westerman; sister-in-law: Peggy Simon; aunt: Ruth Hawk; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and her cherished poodle, Coco.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Ted and Gladys Winter ; grandparents: John and Jettie Winter and William Bruce and Nell Hawk, mother-in-law Kathleen Harper , and brother-in-law: Carroll Harper.
Services were held at Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg with the Rev. Margrethe S.C. Kleiber of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment was at Union Cemetery in Leesburg.
