James Harrison Messer, 84, passed away Sunday, January 17, at Laughlin Healthcare Center of Greeneville.
He was a member of the Piney Grove Baptist Church.
He was a farmer, substitute mail carrier, and was with the Forestry Service.
Harrison and his late wife, Leesta, were called upon many times to sing at churches and funerals; even though busy with their work, they never refused.
Harrison was preceded in death by his parents, Lawson and Frankie Messer; wife, Leesta Shelton Messer; sisters, Leora Carlisle, Grace Dockery and Lavada Reece; and brothers, Clyde Messer, Brown Messer and Ernest Messer.
His survivors include children, Cora Mae and husband, Fred Kelley, and Ruth and husband, Don Kelley, all of Del Rio; sister, Viola Reece of Newport; grandchildren, Jimmy and wife, Kathy Kelley of Del Rio and Bryan and wife, Sharon Kelley of Johnson City; great-grandchildren, Brandi and Brandon Kelley of Del Rio and Lauren and Hayley Kelley of Johnson City; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brown Funeral Chapel with Rev. Marvin Witt and Rev. Bill Murr officiating. Interment will be in the Clark Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Chapel.
