John Lyman Ayers, 96, passed away December 9, 2013.
Born February 27, 1917, he was one of three sons of Thomas Dudley Ayers and Florence Susong Ayers.
Lyman was a life-long farmer until declining health led him to retire in 2008. He was a member of St. Paul Presbyterian Church, where he served as treasurer and on the Board of Trustees.
Lyman attended Lowland School and was a graduate of Morristown High School. He played football for Coach Petie Siler all four years, and served as team captain his senior year. He was recruited by Coach Frostie Holt of Carson-Newman and Coach Robert R. Neyland and assistant Coach Murray Warmouth of the University of Tennessee, but declined scholarships to be a farmer.
Lyman also played semi-professional baseball in Greeneville and Morristown, but chose not to pursue sports in favor of farming.
Recently Lyman was a charter inductee of the Morristown Sports Hall of Fame.
Lyman and Mary Miller Talley were married July 29, 1950 at the St. Paul manse by the Rev. George O. Williams, the pastor. For 63 years, they lived and worked together on the family farm, which is a Century Farm with 200 years continuous agricultural operation.
Preceded in death by his parents and brother, T.D Ayers II, he is survived by his wife, Mary Miller Ayers; two sons and their wives, John and Teresa Ayers and Malcolm and Lisa Ayers; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Ayers Neill and her husband, Robert; great-grandson, Jackson Brady Neill; brother, William Victor Ayers, all of Morristown; three nephews, Lynn, David and Thomas Ayers III; great-nephews, great-nieces and cousins.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 11, 2013, at Stetzer Funeral Home chapel in Morristown.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 12, 2013. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Diana Moore, pastor of St. Paul Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. Rocky Johnson, pastor of Dover Cumberland Presbyterian Church, will officiate. A graveside service will be held at St. Paul Church Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to St. Paul Presbyterian Church or to a charity of their choice.
Stetzer Funeral Home of Morristown is in charge of arrangements.
