- When he enlisted 11 October 1861 at McLeansboro, Illinois, for three years
service he was described as a farmer aged 26 years, 6 feet 6 inches tall, with
blue eyes, fair hair and complexion. He enlisted as a corporal furnishing his
own horse and equipment and was promoted to sergeant 16 May 1862. He died in
the Civil War of smallpox contracted while he was a sergeant with Company D of
the 6th Reg't Illinois Cavalry, U. S. Volunteers.
