August sets us on fire
(c)2007 NPT PHOTO BY DAVID POPIEL Yes, I have an eye for great looking antique vehicles and hot rods. This green and black 1947 Ford pickup was parked at Performance Exhaust in early August. So, I stopped by to chat with owner Dennis Edmonds about it. The truck is owned by a Virginia man who needed some exhaust work done. The truck is in almost original condition. I really licked the black 1957 Chevy Dennis had on the lift putting in dual exhaust. This car will be a beauty when Everett Ramsey of Cave Hill Auto Parts finishes it.

The trends continue of falling gasoline prices to $2.56 and hotter days with the temperature tickling 100 degrees in our hometown as mid-August invites in the county fair on Monday.
It seemed like a good morning for a ham biscuit and I remembered that the newest Subway located at the BP/Amoco off Highway 25/70 west of I-40 was serving breakfast now. The last time I was there the facility was owned by Charlie Mason, now there is a new owner. The fellow at the counter was friendly and interested in meeting his customers. When I discovered he was the new owner, I introduced myself as we sell Plain Talks at his store. He is Vijay Patel, but said he is not kin to Newport's Comfort Inn owner Mike Patel but does know him. Vijay comes here from Crossville. He told me that he would be giving away a free cup of coffee to folks who stop by to meet him. Vijay is a partner with the operator of the Cosby Hwy. Texaco, Rocky Patel. Vijay was selling the lowest priced gas on Thursday and plans to add more groceries and tobacco products.
If you travel along Knoxville Hwy. west of Newport and just past Legends Fitness, you will see construction going on for a new business. I stopped on Thursday morning before it got too hot to move and saw Ronald Munn. His company, Munn's Electrical, was installing wiring and fixtures for what he said was going to be a car rental lot. Just down the road at Stinnett Motors, Cleo Stinnett was sipping on a cup of coffee. He confirmed that the Enterprise Rental that had occupied a building on his lot was moving. So now you know as much as I do about the project. Munn has been doing electrical work for about 20 years and runs his own company since 1995. And, local contractor Ronnie Barrett is building the facility. And, if you're interested the Chevy 2008 trucks have arrived. Summer heat and fires sometimes go together with unfortunate outcomes. I've heard of at least a couple such mishaps, both involving kitchens in Newport. Our advertising rep. Sheila Gorrell lives not far from the Plain Talk. It so happened that she was cooking some days ago when the grease caught fire and that caught her kitchen on fire. The good news is that neither she nor children and pets were injured. Another friend was not so lucky. While visiting with attorney Fred Myers Jr., to do a news story, we chatted about various things such as 9,000 year old arrowheads, good books, and his new law partner, Melissa Ball. He happened to mention that his wife, Norma, had suffered burns. I found out that in early July she was canning at their Iris Street home when she was accidentally burned on her arms and face. Freddy said she has healed well without scars, which was good to hear.
Have you seen him about? He is one of those older men who doesn't look his age and is surely someone you have seen many times even though you might have forgotten his name. I was looking at some office desks Harold Williamson had and discovered he is the Dad to my former Cosby pupil Ricky Williamson, who is a manager with Rustic Furniture. You recall we visited with him off Hwy. 411 and the business advertises in our Visiting the Smokies publication. I noticed that Harold's arms had been scared and he explained the situation. In fact, he has had a difficult time over the past three years and I hope to share this with you soon. About a year ago he was burning some brush and tossed what he thought was diesel fuel on the fire. It was gasoline and flashed back burning both arms and his abdomen. He was hospitalized at Erlanger Burn Center in Chattanooga and was not expected to make it. Harold healed and is able to do a few activities. He seems like an interesting fellow to tell you more about.
In plain talk, on the hot Dog Days of summer it's a smart thing to stay away from fire and make friends with an air conditioner or tall iced tea.
