Randy Shults seeks re-election
Author: Duay O'Neil
COSBY-Incumbent Randy Shults, Fifth District representative to the Cocke County Board of Education, announced today his intentions to seek re-election in the August election.
Shults has served as the district's board member for the past eight years.
In his announcement, Shults said, "I have been a devoted community member my entire life and want to continue making progress for the students and the community members in my district."
Shults pointed to his exceptional attendance record during his eight years as evidence of his devotion to the Cocke County school system. "I have attended all but two board meetings over the past eight years," said Shults. "Therefore I have gained the respect of my fellow board members, and I have voted on most all policy throughout the years. I feel that I have done what has been asked of me during my service as a school board member."
Shults continued, "I have served in many capacities in our community over the years. I have spent time in and around country stores listening to all our community members. I have been involved in athletics throughout the community. I have coached baseball, football, and basketball in the community."
In explaining his thoughts about his work as a board member, Shults said, "A good servant of the community should have roots within the community. I am a product of Cosby Elementary and Cosby High Schools. My parents, David and Dean, attended Cosby Schools and currently own a business in Cosby. As a parent, I have selected Cosby to educate my daughter, Whitney Shults. Therefore, I am a proud parent-supporter of Cosby High School."
During Shults' time on the board, he said, Smoky Mountain Elementary School has enjoyed many accomplishments. "Smoky Mountain has attained new windows throughout the building," he said, "which have saved taxpayers money due to electrical efficiency. The school has replaced window air-conditioners with central heat and air to better serve our students and conserve electricity. The community basketball court overflows with visitors and allows our community a place to gather and play basketball.
"A baseball facility has been constructed and has served as a place of pride for our schools. Many other teams visit the baseball fields and have been impressed by the facilities. The school has attained a well-deserved Pre-K class during my tenure. The school remains SACS/CASI accredited due to the hard work and dedication of the students, parents, and staff at Smoky Mountain Elementary School."
"During my service to you, the community, and the students, some things originally thought to be impossible have become possible. The school board was able to purchase a 15-acre tract of land for the promotion of Cosby athletics. The sports complex is currently in its beginning phases with assistance from the National Guard, a partnership which again will save the taxpayers money. The football field and bleachers are immaculate and serve as a meeting place for our district and county's largest gatherings - Cosby Eagles football. Cosby athletics continues to prove each of us with pride through the year."
In reflecting on his time as a board member, Shults, who currently serves as co-chairman, said, "I am very proud of our accomplishments together. I am thankful that you entrust me with your most precious resource-your students. I ask for your continued support so that we can continue to make a positive difference in the Fifth District and Cocke County."
