John O. "Otis" Laws, Sr., 86, of Lorain, died Monday July 24, 2006, at his home after a long illness. He was born April 7, 1920, in Hartford, Tennessee, and had resided in Lorain since 1953. Otis served with the U.S. Army during World War II as a sergeant in Battery "B" 376th Coast Artillery Battalion. He served in the Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He received the American Theater Campaign Medal, EAME Campaign Medal w/3 Bronze Stars, Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medal. Otis worked at US Steel in Lorain for 29 years in the 2 Seamless Production Mill as a Crane Follower retiring in 1982. He enjoyed gardening and was featured in a Morning Journal article over 20 years ago displaying his gardening skills. He also enjoyed reading, traveling and being with his family. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Edna "Dean" Laws (nee Burdette); sons, John O. Laws, Jr., of Lorain, and Larry Laws, of California; daughters: Cheryl Quickle, of Foothill Ranch, California; Sandra Rottari, of Wakeman; and Michele Laws, of Lorain; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Faye Smith, of Honea Path, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, S.L. Laws and Flora Laws (nee Green); great-grandson, Will Quickle; and 5 brothers and 3 sisters. The family will receive friends Friday 4-8 p.m. at Gluvna Shimo Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain, where funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Mike Manosky, pastor of Sugar Ridge Baptist Church, will officiate. Entombment will follow in Freedom Chapel of Resthaven Memory Gardens in Avon where the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
