Charles Clay Webb died suddenly Wednesday morning, October 1, 2003, of an apparent heart attack. He was 62.
He was born in Cosby, Tennessee, on April 25, 1941, a son of Alvin and Bonnie (McMahan) Webb. As a child he and his family moved to Newport where he attended Newport Grammar School and Cocke County High School, where he graduated in 1965.
Following high school graduation, he worked for Dixie Music Company. On November 11, 1967, he went to work for the City of Newport as a patrolman.
He interrupted his work with the police department when he went to work for the State Department of Revenue on December 21, 1970, a job he held until May 1, 1976.
At that time he returned to the Newport Police Department. He was promoted to sergeant on March 2, 1982, and captain on March 1, 1983. He was named Assistant Police Chief on September 25, 1997, and on July 1, 2001, was named Chief of Police, a position he continued to fill until his death.
During his career he attended numerous schools, academies, and workshops pertaining to his work in law enforcement.
On June 4, 1965, he married the former Sandra (Sandy) Ball.
He attended First United Methodist Church of Newport.
He was preceded in death by his father and two infant brothers.
He is survived by his wife, of the home; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Bart and Teresa Webb and Grant Webb; his mother, Bonnie M. Webb; one brother, James “Monk” Webb, all of Newport; one sister and brother-in-law, Donald and Betty Jean (Webb) Kilgore, of Parrottsville; three grandchildren, Jake and Addison Webb and Madison Gilliam, all of Newport.
Additional survivors include two sisters-in-law and their husbands, John and Billie Sue (Ball) Webb, of Newport, and Rusty and Frieda (Ball) Hartsell, of Ashboro, N.C.; one special aunt, Pauline M. Rice, of Newport; several additional aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of friends.
Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2003, at First United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends from 12 to 3 p.m. Saturday prior to the services at the church.
