Bonnie Webb, noted restaurateur, died at 93
Author: Duay O'Neil
NEWPORT-One of Newport's best known and most beloved restaurateurs has died.
Bonnie Webb passed away Saturday afternoon, July 24, at Newport Health and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 93.
Born September 1, 1916 in Cosby, she was the daughter of Wilse and Betty (Jenkins) McMahan. Her father died when Bonnie was a young girl and her mother later married Noah Forrester.
She was one of six McMahan children who lived to adulthood, including her brother Glenn McMahan, twins Paul McMahan and Pauline (McMahan) Rice, and sister Ila B. (McMahan) McFarland, all of whom are now deceased.
She was married to the late Alvin (Sorry) Webb, who served as Newport's Assistant Chief of Police.
All of the sons are now deceased. They included Clay Webb, who also served as Newport's Chief of Police, James (Monk) Webb, who died June 26 of this year, Thad Webb, who died as a child, and Mackey Webb, who died at birth.
For several decades, Bonnie's name was synonymous with Newport's food service industry.
In the 1950s, she was employed in Gatlinburg, but later returned to Cocke County to work at the old Smoky Mountain Club on Hwy. 25/70.
Later she opened her own eatery, The Teddy Bear Grill, which was located near the Cocke County Courthouse.
Many citizens still associate her with a later restaurant, Bonnie's (now Fox and Hounds), which she ran beginning in the 1960s, having taken over its operation from the late Barney and Kima Suttles.
After leaving there, she moved to Smoky Mountain Country Club, where she served up countless cheeseburgers and French fries to her patrons.
In speaking of his friend, Judge Kenneth Porter recalled, "Bonnie was a great asset to our community. She was simply a great gal, an excellent cook, who loved people, cooking, and feeding the community. She took care of both the children and adults at Smoky Mountain Country Club. Her death is a loss to our community."
Echoing Porter was Maxey Mullen, who said, "Bonnie was an awful good cook. She took care of all of us, both at the country club and later at what is now Fox and Hounds."
Her friends also recall her no-nonsense approach to letting her customers know closing time had arrived.
"If it was time to close," said Frances Mullen, "and there were some 'hangers-on,' Bonnie would simply get a bottle of ammonia and start wiping down the table tops. The fumes would quickly empty the place."
Upon retiring from the food service industry, she found a new career as a caregiver for the elderly. At an age when most of her peers had entered permanent retirement, she continued to work steadily until well into her eighties.
Throughout her life, she earned a reputation for straightforwardness, honesty, sense of humor, and compassion.
She enjoyed her family and took pride in her position as matriarch of five generations.
She also enjoyed the many visits she received from her former customers and friends. As late as last week, she entertained them and always insisted on having the door to her room open so that she could see who passed by.
She is survived by her daughter Betty Jean (Webb) Kilgore of Parrottsville; daughter-in-law Sandy Webb of Newport; seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, as well as one brother Sheridan McMahan.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Costner-Maloy Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with funeral services immediately following.
Family and friends will meet at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at Union Cemetery for a 10:00 a.m. interment.
Costner-Maloy Funeral Home of Newport is handling the arrangements.
