Notes |
- In the 1850 census William Matteer was living in Carlisle, Pennsylvania; he was
aged 37 years with wife Jane aged 34, and sons John aged 10, William aged 8,
Robert aged 5 and George aged one year.
During the Civil War Robert Mateer enlisted at Bacon Creek, Kentucky on 13
February 1862, for three years in Company I 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry; he was
then a farmer, 18 years old, 5 feet 5 inches in height, with light hair and
blue eyes. At Dandridge, Tennessee on 16 January 1864 he "was wounded in the
left ankle ... while in the regular line of duty", which injury rendered him
"entirely unfit for being a soldier as it is difficult for him to either walk
or ride." His disability discharge certificate, dated 29 December 1864 "near
Savannah, Georgia" lists his home address as Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. After
his discharge Robert Mateer was a sometime fiserman; he moved from place to
place living in, besides Pennsylvania, Sacramento, Los Angeles and Long Beach,
California, National Soldiers Home, Montgomery County, Ohio, in 1922, and
National Soldiers Home, Hampton, Virginia.
Robert Mateer died in the National Soldiers Home and is buried in the National
Cemetery.
