Markers to be unveiled By: Duay O'Neil Source: The Newport Plain Talk 07-13-2007 COSBY - Saturday, July 28, three East Tennessee pioneers will be honored by members of the Thomas Ogle Chapter Daughters of the War of 1812. Cosby residents James Baxter and Jesse Giles, along with Sevier County veteran Robert Matthews, will have monuments unveiled and dedicated in their memory in a series of ceremonies beginning at 10:00 a.m. According to Beth O. Freeman, chapter president, the first marker dedication will honor James Baxter. "His marker has been placed in the old Jesse Baxter Cemetery, which is immediately adjacent to the new Valentine Family Cemetery off Caney Creek Road. The cemetery is a short distance from Liberty Church," Ogle said. Following this dedication, everyone is invited to remove to Ogle Hill Cemetery for a noon ceremony honoring Jesse Giles, whose marker has been erected there. That afternoon, a similar ceremony will be held in the Baxter-Matthews Cemetery in Sevier County in honor of Robert Matthews. It will begin at 3:00 p.m. "All three men served together during the War of 1812," said Freeman, "at the famed Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Their families intermarried, and hundreds of local people proudly claim them as their ancestors." According to Freeman, everyone is invited to attend the events.
