KNOXVILLE—Cocke County
Attorney Fletcher Ervin is in Knoxville’s Park West Hospital after suffering an apparent stroke.
Ervin’s son, Michael, relayed information on his father’s condition during a phone interview Friday morning.
"Apparently, this started day before yesterday," said Michael Ervin, who also resides in Newport. "Dad’s secretary started noticing him acting unusual. Then, while he was getting dressed yesterday, Mom noticed he was putting two socks on the same foot.
"We took him to Dr. (A.J.) Garbarino at Family Practice Center in Newport and then to Baptist Hospital in Knoxville. Dr. Garbarino was able to confirm he had a stroke."
Michael Ervin said his father was finally taken to Park West Hospital Thursday evening.
"Dad had a mini stroke about three years ago and was treated at Park West," he said. "They decided to send him back there this time, since it was where he was treated the first time.
"They did a scan and can see some of the damage from the first stroke but they can’t see any damage from this latest stroke."
Fletcher Ervin had a pacemaker installed last year. As a result, Michael Ervin said the hospital staff was unable to do an MRI in checking for damage.
"Dad’s motor skills seem to be fine but he has lost some of his memory and ability to think," he said.
"He remembered my son’s name after about three seconds. He could write cursive but couldn’t remember how to print letters. When you asked him how he’s feeling, he says he can’t recollect.
"Hopefully, he’ll regain his memory. We’re not sure how long he’s going to have to be in here. We’re just going to have to wait and see how things go."
Besides son Michael, Fletcher and wife Penny Ervin have another son, Robert, who resides in Sweetwater.

Honored For Service Quilt of Valor presented to Fletcher Ervin
Newport attorney Fletcher Ervin and his wife Penny hold a Quilt of Valor presented to him recently for his service in Vietnam.
NEWPORT—Fletcher Ervin, Newport attorney, received a Quilt of Valor during a brief ceremony in his downtown Newport office recently.
Jan Pittenger, a member of the Smoky Mountain Chapter of Quilts of Valor in Sevierville, made the presentation.
The hand-stitched creation honored Ervin for his military service in Vietnam. Rising to the rank of captain during that time, Ervin received the Bronze Star, Good Conduct medal, National Defense, Vietnam Service, and Vietnam Campaign medals.
Veterans Jim Pittenger and Vern Zimmerman pinned Ervin with the Bronze Star.
Quilts of Valor, an international organization, creates quilts “stitched with love, prayers, and healing thoughts,” said a spokesman.
Catherine Roberts of Seaford, Delaware, began Quilts of Valor in 2003 while her son served in Iraq as a way to make sure servicemen and women were welcomed home with love and gratitude.
Her efforts grew to a goal of giving a quilt to all soldiers touched by war.
Thus far, over 90,000 quilts have been presented to soldiers as a way to connect the home front with the battlefield.
“I know that each time I quilt one of these creations, I always think about the soldier who will receive it, and I make sure I do my best work for him or her to show my gratitude for their service, sacrifice, and bravery,” said Jan Pittenger.
Said Ervin, “I want to thank the Quilts of Valor for honoring me for my service with this tangible gift. The work
of this organization gives servicemen and women recogntion for their service, sacrifice, and valor.”
Following the local ceremony, Ervin was honored with a gathering at East Tennessee Coffee Company in celebration of his birthday.
