- During the Civil War James S. Mateer served as a sergeant in Company M, 14th
Regiment Pennsylvania Cavalry from 31 December 1863 until discharged at Fort
Leavenworth, Kansas, on 31 July 1865. At the time of his enlistment he was
described as a capenter, 6 feet 3 inches tall, with fair complexion, blue eyes
and dark hair. After the war he lived in Kittanning, Pittsburg and Butler
County, Pennsylvania.
