Clara Amalee Butler, age 94, died on March 2, 2005, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Newport, where she received care her last five months of life.
Mrs. Butler was born and lived most of her life in the Bogard Community, including forty-nine years in the home she and her husband built. She lived in Baneberry for four years prior to her final period of illness. She joined Union Baptist Church in September 1937 and at the time of her death was its oldest member. She graduated from Cocke County High School, having earlier attended Lanier High School and Bogard and Baltimore elementary schools. Throughout her life she exemplified a love of reading and learning and the virtues of work, frugality, honesty and concern for others.
Born on December 22, 1910, she was the oldest of eleven children-six sisters and five brothers-of Julia Ann Hurst and Benjamin Harrison Butler of Bogard and later of Newport. Her parents preceded her in death, as did her husband Oliver; brothers, Raymond, Oscar (Nig), Eugene, and Benjamin (Bill) Jr.; and sisters, Dorothy Clevenger, June Butler, and Gail Caldwell.
Survivors include; sister, Susie Taylor and husband Jim of Virginia; brother, Stanley and wife Roma June of Illinois; sister, Joann Fine and husband Ralph of Newport; son Wayne and wife Ernestine of Cosby; daughters Peggy Cates and husband Edward of Newport; son Larry and wife Vicki of Newport; son Lonnie of Baneberry; grandchildren, Barbara Fine of Cosby, Vickie Clevenger and husband Barry of Newport, Terry Butler and wife Sherry of Newport, Gregory Cates and Melanie Cates of Atlanta and Benjamin Butler of Newport; former daughter-in-law and friend, Beth Moore of Maryville and sisters-in-law Reva Butler and Dorothy Butler of Cosby; numerous other relatives.
Special thanks are extended to son-in-law Edward Cates, daughter-in-law Ernestine Butler, Dr. James Williams and staff of Newport Family Medical Center, staff of Smoky Mountain Health and Hospice, and family friend Estel Daniels.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday March 5, 2005, at Union Baptist Church with Rev. Ray Wiley officiating with burial in the Jenkins Chapel Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday, March 4, from 6 until 7:30 p.m. at Manes Funeral Home and from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. Saturday March 5, at Union Baptist Church prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Union Baptist Church or to Jenkins Chapel Cemetery Fund.
