Betty Jo Miller, retired educator and civic leader, dies at 83
Author: Duay O'Neil
NEWPORT-Betty Jo Miller, noted educator and civic leader, died at her College Street home late Thursday night after a long period of declining health. She was 83.
Born at the home of her grandparents in the Bat Harbor community on Oct. 26, 1927, she was the older of two daughters of Cecil and Vera (Brooks) Winter. Following the death of their mother six years later, Miller and her younger sister Nancy Ruth were reared by their aunts Bernice (Aunt B) and Josephine (Aunt Jo) Brooks.
Both aunts were teachers at the time, but following Mrs. Winter's death, Miss Bernice Brooks left the profession to stay at home with her nieces. The early education Miller received from her aunts allowed her to skip first grade and begin her formal education as a second grader at Mountain View School, a short distance from the family home.
She later entered Cocke County High School during World War II and graduated in 1944 after three years of study.
Her proficient typing skills earned her a clerical job in Oak Ridge working on the Manhattan Project. However, because she wasn't legally old enough to be employed there, the management changed the date of her birth on her birth certificate to comply with regulations.
