- During the Civil War Samuel H. Mateer enlisted at Ashley, Ohio, on 13 Aug. 1862
as a private in Company D 121st Reg't Ohio Volunteers, transferred on 10 March
1863 to 4th Battalion Pioneer Corps, on 30 June 1864 to Co. F 1st U. S. Veteran
Volunteers, where he was a corporal when mustered out on 27 June 1865 at
Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Samuel Huston Mateer was a blacksmith and inventor of a plow. He and his wife
lived in Illinois for a time en route to Kansas.
