Elisabeth Irene Brooks Miller of Sevierville, passed away November 11, 2001. She was born in Del Rio, Tennessee in 1919, the seventh child of Andrew (Drew) Joel Brooks and Robbie Mae Wild Brooks, and granddaughter of the late Molly Huff Brooks and John Royal Brooks, former Tennessee legislator.
She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Sevierville for many years, singing in the church choir, the chapel trio, and at times serving as the interim director for children’s choirs. She taught Sunday School, was a G.A. leader, G.A. director, active in W.M.U. and Training Union, and served as the Sunday School music director. She was active with the Helping Hands Ministry, Team Reach, Christmas Store and Outreach Ministry.
She was a published author, and active in community and civic organizations. She volunteered for mother’s marches and other efforts to raise monies for children’s causes. She served as a leader for the Junior and Cadette Girl Scout troops, and was a member and past-president of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, member and past-president of the Tuesday Evening Music Club, and for many years emceed the Music and Arts Festival from the courthouse steps in Sevierville, and several times organized the Community Choral Sing during National Music Week.
She was an able actor and vocalist in musical productions staged by the music club, was an active member and secretary of the P.T.A., and taught “English as a Second Language” (ESL) in her home in Ridgecrest after her retirement in 1988 from the Sevier County Board of Education.
Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, J. Roy, her parents, and six brothers: Chester Forrest, Andrew Hal, John David, William Lacy, James Franklin and Larry Wayne; one sister, Anna Laura Brooks Thornton.
Survivors include brother A.J. Brooks and wife Juanita Brooks, sons Larry Richard of Sevierville, Jerry Lee of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and daughter Vikki Lynne of Raleigh, North Carolina, grandchildren Kacie and Michael Miller of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Jonathan Brooks King of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Stephen Michael and Kevin Andrew Schmoeger of Raleigh, North Carolina, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted daughter in law Ruth Carr Miller.
Funeral services are 7:00 PM Wednesday, November 14 in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville, with Reverends Jerry Hyder and Melvin Carr officiating. Family and friends will meet 1PM Thursday in Shiloh Cemetery for graveside service and interment. Pallbearers: J.C. Thornton, Larry W. Brooks, Larry E. Brooks, Randall Brooks and Barry French, and Bobby Brooks. The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Wednesday November 14 at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.
