MILLER, J. ROY, - widely known land surveyor, of Sevierville, Tenn., passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2000. He was 81 years of age. He was a veteran of World War II, Navy, Asiatic-Pacific area, honorably discharged February, 1946. Prior to enlistment, he was employed by TVA in the Chattanooga, Tenn. engineering dept., maps and surveys, and was recruited by the U.S. Government to do top secret surveying and mapping of strategic coastal areas of our country vulnerable to enemy attack. After being discharged he moved with his family to Sevierville and set up a practice of surveying and engineering. He was the engineer on the first treatment plant built by the city of Sevierville and was the resident engineer during the construction of Cherokee Textile Mill. He attended the Oak Street Church of God and donated property and topographical surveys to the children's home. He was a member and past Post Commander of V.F.W. Post 5776 and a member of the Gatlinburg Elks Lodge.
He is survived by his wife Irene B. Miller; sons Jerry Lee of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Larry Richard Miller of Sevierville; daughter and son in law Vikki Lynne and Duane A. Schmoeger, Raleigh, N.C.; sister and brother in law, Catherine and Greg Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Kacie and Michael Miller, Colorado Springs, Jonathan King, Stephen and Kevin Schmoeger of Raleigh, N.C.; several cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will hold a private ceremony. Arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home.

J. Roy Miller, 81, of Sevierville died Thursday, July 13, 2000.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy in the Asiatic-Pacific Area. He was honorably discharged in February 1946. He worked for the government to survey and map strategic coastal areas vulnerable to enemy attack.
He worked in the engineering department of Tennessee Valley Authority, then after the war opened his own surveying and engineering practice. He was the engineer on the first treatment plant built by the city of Sevierville and was the resident engineer during the construction of Cherokee Textile Mill.
He attended Oak Street Church of God and donated property and topographical surveys to the children's home. He was a member and past Post Commander of V.F.W. Post 5776, and a member of the Gatlinburg Elks Lodge.
