Fire destroys log home
By: PENNY BANDY, Staff Writer December 02, 2000
PITTMAN CENTER - For Ruth Miller, nostalgia went up in flames Thursday as her log home burned.
"It's the memories that's gone," she said.
Miller arrived on the fire scene about a half hour after the fire broke out at about 4 p.m. She rented the home to Chaia Moot.
Moot said her two cats were inside the burning home. She was next door when the fire started.
The fire's cause is unknown.
Miller is the daughter of the Rev. Melvin Carr, who lives near the home on Pittman Center Road.
Carr said he "heard something roaring and I looked out and the window had blown out."
The house then became fully involved and caught much of the roof on fire.
Flames caught an electric line, causing it to spark.
When Pittman Center volunteer firefighters arrived, they immediately soaked the fire. But it rekindled and most of the home was lost. Firefighters salvaged some furniture.
Miller said she had some antiques inside. She had renovated the home and put in a new heating and air conditioning unit in the past year. The house was more than 50 years old.
When Miller was a child, she spent time with the homeowner, Lily Day.
"She used to get me to shine the logs," she said, adding that a nickel was her reward.
Miller bought the home from her sister 10 years ago.
"It was history," said Miller. "But you know, it was old."
Carr said his church, Laurel Branch Baptist and Richardson's Cove Baptist Church will likely help Moot get back her feet since Christmas is coming up and the woman lost all her belongings.
Anyone interested in helping Moot may phone Carr at 436-4246.
Pittman Center Fire Inspector Joe Galentine said he probably won't know what caused the fire until next week.
