SMITH, DOYLE L. - age 89, of Morristown and formerly of Del Rio, Tenn. went to be with his Heavenly Father on November 2, 2000, at Morristown-Hamblen Hospital. He was the son of the late, Arthur and Mary Bible Smith of Del Rio and was preceded in death by brothers, Eual and Floyd Smith; sisters, Leone and Ruby Smith; and grandson, Christian Robinson.
Doyle is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Mary Bell Smith. He was the devoted father of son, Lt. Gen. (Retired) Hubert G. Smith and wife, Nancy of Clarksville, Tenn.; daughters, Barbara Robinson and husband, Leo of Morristown and Nancy Lemieux and husband, Ronald of Edmond, Okla. Other survivors are; grandchildren and their spouses, Drs. Maurice and Jill Robinson, Dr. Stacia and Robert Pratt of Morristown, Christopher Todd Smith of Knoxville, Laura and Cpt. Steve Wright of Germany, Rob and Leanna Stephenson of Anchorage, Alaska, Jon Stephenson of Mountain City, Timothy and April Stephenson of Troy, Ill.; and step grandsons and wives, Richard and Amy Lemieux of Hampton, Va. and Roland and Kris Lemieux of Anchorage, Alaska. Doyle is also survived by great grandchildren, Aaron and Sean Saylor, Ashley and Alex Robinson, Tyler Stephenson, Ricky, Renee, and Elizabeth Lemieux. Other survivors are sisters, Mrs. Louie Turner, Knoxville, Mrs. Loiree Collins, Mrs. Iva Freeman, Mrs. Bureda Finchum, and brother, Arthur B. Smith, all of Del Rio, Tenn. A talented musician and singer, and a committed Christian, he taught Sunday school and directed music at the First Church of God, Del Rio for 44 years. He later joined Panther Springs United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School for several years. In his youth, a highlight of his life was singing gospel music with his sisters and brother at the International Salvation Army Convention in Atlanta, Ga. He held singing schools throughout East Tenn., with an emphasis on shaped notes, a lost art among mountain singers. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor, his love of storytelling, and his gentle spirit. A carpenter, he was retired from BASF(American Enka) and had also worked in Cleveland, Ohio and in Morristown as a finish carpenter. The family will receive friends at Westside Chapel in Morristown Saturday evening from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be Sunday 2 p.m. at Panther Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Garland James officiating. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Panther Springs United Methodist Church, 4555 West A.J. Hwy., Morristown, Tenn. or to the ALPS Center 600 N. Daisy Street, Morristown, Tenn. 37814.
