Robert E. (Bob) Owen, 80, of Moline, Illinois, well-known area businesman, died Sunday, August 27, 2006, in Park View Health Care Center, East Moline.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, with The Reverend Alan Mothershed officiating. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Robert Eugene Owen was born March 4, 1926, in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Ronald and Gertrude (Peg) Spraker Owen. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II as a tailgunner stationed in Louisiana and Germany. He married Emily Katherine Hargrove on November 20, 1949, in Moline.
He owned and operated Bob Owen’s Mobil on 23rd Avenue and 27th Street in Moline, for over 30 years, retiring in 1985. He started at the station when he was 15 and bought it in 1953. He was a partner with Frank Donis in Frank and Bob’s Sunset Marina for several years in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
Bob was past president of Chapter 8 of Holiday Rambler Roadrunners and a member of Moline Family Campers. He loved camping, boating, and his 20-acre farm in Lynn Center.
Bob is survived by his wife, Kathy; three children and their spouses, Meg and Larry Steele of East Moline, and Sue and Paul Thomas and Brett and Sue Owen, all of Moline; eight grandchildren, Emily Owen, Oliver Owen. Peter Owen and his wife Stacey, Charles Owen and his fiance Chris Gimble, Mike Steele and his wife Angie, Scott Steele, Casey Thomas and Andrew Thomas; and two new great-granddaughters of whom he was very proud, Aubryn Taylor Owen and Isabella Sue Steele. He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Louise Alvarado.
