MOLINE - Katherine H. Owen, 79, of Moline, died Saturday, January 27, 2007, in Park View Terrace Health Care Center, East Moline. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline, with The Reverend Allen Mothershed officiating. Burial is in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Emily Katherine Hargrove was born June 28, 1927, in Miami, Fla., the daughter of James C. and Kate (McMahon) Hargrove . She spent her childhood in Brazil and Columbia, and was fluent in Spanish and Portuguese. She and her mother and sisters were evacuated from Brazil at the start of World War II, and later moved to Bettendorf. She graduated from Davenport High School and attended the University of Illinois, Marycrest College, and St. Ambrose University. She married Robert E. Owen on November 20, 1949, in Moline. He died August 27, 2006.
She taught Kindergarten at Grant School, in Moline for five years and then owned and operated Mother Goose Pre-school, in Moline for 14 years. She was a Lifetime Member of PTA, and was on local and state PTA Boards. She was past president of Chapter 8 of Holiday Rambler Roadrunners and a member of Moline Family Campers. She loved camping, boating, sewing, reading mysteries, attending her grandchildren's baseball games, and spending time at their 20-acre farm in Lynn Center. She was fascinated by genealogy and enjoyed traveling.
Katherine is survived by three children and their spouses, Meg and Larry Steele, of East Moline, and Sue and Paul Thomas and Brett and Sue Owen, all of Moline; eight grandchildren, Mike Steele and his wife Angie, Scott Steele, Casey Thomas, Andrew Thomas, Oliver Owen. Peter Owen and his wife Stacey, Charles Owen and his wife Chris, and Emily Owen; two great-granddaughters, Aubryn Taylor Owen and Isabella Sue Steele; and a sister, Hazel Hargrove , of Iowa City.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister, Jean Calhoun, and a brother, James Hargrove , in infancy.
