  On 26 August 1832 Baily Mateer and Eliza Jane Mateer, son and daughter of James Mateer late of Allen Township deceased, both minors over 14 years, petitioned to have Levi Markel appointed their guardian; the court so agreed. The 1850 census lists a Bayley Mateer, preacher, living in Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; his houshold included his wife Mary A. and three children: Sarah J. aged 10, Albert aged 7, and James A. aged two years. Bayley's age is given as 27, and his wife's age as 25. This man was almost certainly Bailey, but with a very considerable discrepancy for his and his wife's ages. In 1860 in Lower Allen Township, B. Mateer, laborer, aged 48 was listed with wife M. aged 47, and children S. F. (female) aged 20 and J. D. (male) aged 12.
