Mr. Osie Paul Ownby went home to be with his loved ones in Heaven the morning of Friday, July 2, 2004, at the age of 94. Mr. Ownby was a mountain musician since childhood who kept alive the music of an earlier era in the Great Smoky Mountains. He was an historian and a mountain man born in the Baskin’s Creek community.
Mr. Ownby was preceded in death by his wife, Adis Ruth Myers Ownby; daughter Shirley Jean Ownby; granddaughter Laura May Ownby; mother Ella Jane Ogle Ownby; grandparents Levi and Julia Ann Ogle; and brother Hobert Ownby.
He is survived by son James D. Ownby and his wife Charlotte of Stillwater, Oklahoma; daughter Mary Jane Ownby of Sevier County; granddaughter Holly Gadbois and her husband Buzz of McKinney, Texas; granddaughter Mary Fay Ownby of Richmond, Virginia; and special friends Michelle and Rose of Sevier County.
Service for Osie will be 8:00 p.m. Sunday, July 4, 2004 at Rawlings Funeral Chapel with Dr. W.W. Cope and Rev. Bill Maples officiating. Interment will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 5 at Pigeon Forge Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30-8:00 p.m. Sunday, July 5 at Rawlings Funeral Home.
