McClure says he just wants to help people

Kevin McClure does what he loves to do every time he goes home - spend time with his three daughters, from left, Ashlynn, 12, Morgan, 4, and Sydney, 7.
When newly elected Pigeon Forge Commissioner Kevin J. McClure talks about wanting to help city residents, he's serious. It's what he does for a living.
McClure is an administrator for the Sevier County Ambulance Service. Prior to taking this position, he spent seven years on the road as an emergency medical technician, working 24-hour shifts to aid the county's sick and injured.
"If you help bring them back, that's a blessing," he said. "I've just always wanted to help people. It's a way of giving back to your community - like becoming a city commissioner."
It's a good job that has let him help many people throughout the years, but McClure's face darkens as he talks about the downside to being in the business of life and death. When a former supervisor was stricken ill at home, McClure was the first on the scene to try to help.
"I was the first person in the house to give him aid," he said. "When it's someone you know, it really takes a toll on you. You react differently. He was a good man."
It's this concern for safety that is behind McClure's desire to see a paid fire department established in the city, he said.
McClure's wife, Stephanie, is a detective with the Sevier County Sheriff's Department. They are the proud parents of three girls: Ashlynn, 12, Sydney, 7, and Morgan, 4.
McClure grows animated as he talks about his girls. Ashlynn, the oldest, is a "basketball nut" and member of the Junior Beta Club. Sydney sings in church and makes good grades. When it comes to Morgan, though, McClure grins even wider.
"The 4-year-old is the politician of the group," he said. "She talks to everyone. She doesn't meet a stranger. She'll be president one day."
Growing up in a neighborhood near the Old Mill that old-timers know as "The Bottom," McClure is a lifelong resident of Pigeon Forge. He is a graduate of Sevier County High School.
McClure, 34, is the youngest commissioner by nearly 20 years. Mayor Ralph Chance had once been the youngest member of the city commission - but no longer.
"I told him, 'I'm the baby now,'" McClure said, grinning.
He may be the "baby" of the board, but McClure's family is old in local politics. His father, John, has been a member of the Sevier County Board of Education since 1990 and formerly served as a county commissioner. His aunt, Earlene Teaster, is the city manager.
"My dad's been in it forever," McClure said. "He's been a good teacher. If I can stay in it as long as he has, I'll know I've accomplished something. He's doing something right. He's been in it a long time."
Not content to sit still, McClure is currently seeking a bachelor's degree in organizational management from Tusculum College.
"You've got to keep up with it," he said. "It's tough. It teaches you to be a good leader."
Sitting down to lunch at a local restaurant, McClure is intercepted by a city resident, eager to shake hands.
"I should bring my list," the man said, laughing.
"List?" McClure said, playing along.
"The list of things we want done."
McClure grinned at the comment and laughed, but, after the man left, his manner turned serious as the topic turned to his motivations.
"I just really want to be able to help people," he said.

Keep an eye
on the kids
Pigeon Forge Vice Mayor Kevin McClure's favorite thing about Christmas is watching his daughters Morgan and Sydney open their presents and seeing the joy and happiness on their faces.
This Christmas, McClure bought his children the interactive gaming console Nintendo Wii, and it brought back childhood memories of playing Atari with his cousin, Keith Whaley, who's now mayor of Pigeon Forge. They played a video game system called an Odyssey.
