January 13, 1931 - April 2, 2018
James (Jim) B. Parton was born January 13, 1931 to Joe and Pearl Parton in Elkmont, TN. A place he never wanted to leave and always returned to with his family where he shared many memories. Memories of the thriving town of Elkmont, the church, the grocery story his family ran, and the school with the rock outside that all the kids slid on. At the age of 14, he met Jesus Christ his Savior and gave his heart to Him and began his walk and service to the Lord. God led Jim to the one He had chosen for his wife, a pretty little girl with a black pony tail named Annette Trentham. It took three years to convince Annette that God had planned them a life together. Jim and Annette grew together in their service to the Lord at Roaring Fork Baptist Church, as well as their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren at this church where their lives and hearts were. Jim also tried the grocery business with his mother, his friend “Dood” Brown, and his cousin (brother as everyone thought) Henry, which lasted several years until the larger stores crowded out the small town markets. Then Jim accidentally fell into the accounting business. A CPA practice that thrived, became a family business, tradition one might say, sometimes be-grudgingly especially the “tax season” time of year. The uniqueness of his CPA office was that it always honored God. At anytime one might walk into the office and interrupt a prayer going on with a friend, client, or someone in need of help especially since Jim served as the benevolence chairman for 40 plus years at Roaring Fork.
However, the groceryman, the CPA, nor the farmer (his hobby, but most people thought it was his profession) is Jim Parton’s legacy. His legacy, his example, his history, his life is his service and faithfulness to God. Whether it was teaching a Sunday School Class with Kyle, Dood, or Henry of rowdy junior boys, or helping discern God’s will in the church leadership or business, or just being sensitive to God’s guidance to a man, woman or child who needed help or just giving his testimony that God might use to touch another heart. This is the legacy of Jim Parton. Jim led by example, practiced what he preached, not perfect by any means, just saved and washed by the Blood of Jesus Christ, who tried humbly to do what God wanted him to do. Even to the end, after his mind and memory failed him, whenever called upon, Jim Parton could always pray to his precious savior! And as he always said: “We can never thank you enough for what you have done for us!” He touched many lives by his witness and his willingness to help, some we know and others we will never know, but God knows. We know that God welcomed him to Heaven Monday night with “Well done my good and faithful servant.”
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Pearl Parton, sisters, Stella, Lee, Mary, Grace, Joann, Pearl, brother, Joe Jr., and son-in-law, Bill Moneymaker.
