John Franklin Shular, age 84 of Sevierville, died Wednesday, September 15, 2004. He served on the Sevier County Court in the late 60’s/early 70’s, he served as a county deputy under 2 sheriffs (Bat Gibson and Carman Townsend), was a life-long farmer, builder, and carpenter, and worked placing power poles for the electric system in the 1950’s. He always placed tobacco and hay in the Sevier County Fair where he enjoyed all of the exhibits and attended every year. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and also attended Love Chapel Baptist Church. He helped build the original Antioch Baptist Church. He was a resident of Sevier County Health Care Center in 1997, recuperating from a truck accident in which he broke his neck-he was very active at the nursing home even during his recuperation. He always wanted to do something for someone else and even after his discharge home in 1998 he continued to return to the nursing home every Thursday to help the dietary department distribute meal trays to the residents. An unusual occurrence also during his nursing home stay was that his 96 year old mother, Anna B. Shular, was also a patient and they had quite a good time before she went home to be with Papaw in December, 1997.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Aileen Tarwater Shular; granddaughter, Lisa Michelle Reagan; brothers, Ray, Gordon, Nelson, George and Robert Nelson Shular; sister, Martha Maxine Shular; parents, William Alexander “Bill” and Anna Belle Jenkins Shular.

Spending time with residents of the nursing home in which he had been a patient was what most people remembered about John Franklin Shular, 84, of Sevierville, who died Wednesday.
Jack Jordan, administrator at Sevier County Health Care Center in Sevierville, said he knew Shular since 1966. "We were very close friends," he said.
Jordan said that following his retirement, Shular became a volunteer at the nursing home. "He helped to take the food carts out, played bingo with the residents, and did other patient activities - it was one of his favorite things to do before he was a patient in the center and between being a resident there," said Jordan, recalling when Shular broke his neck in an automobile wreck and was a patient in the center for awhile.
Jordan also recalled that Shular had served on the former Sevier County Court in the late 1960s and early 1970s and said, "He lived out in the 10th district and represented them very well while serving on the court.
"He was a very good person, very opinionated, but a good Christian man - I have no negative remembrances of John," said Jordan.
Shular's work as a volunteer at the center, as well as his stint on the former county court, were also well remembered by Brian Atchley, assistant administrator of the center.
"For the past several years, he was there every Thursday," Atchley said. "I would know it was Thursday when I came to work because John would be here helping the dietary department load trays or pick up trays - he never missed.
"After that he would play bingo with the residents - he considered it his job," Atchley continued, adding that Shular also enjoyed talking politics with him.
"John was fun to be around," he said.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville, where the family received friends Friday evening. Interment will take place today at 10 a.m. in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
